The Montessori Method
Following the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori, a child learns by doing. Dr. Montessori is considered by many to be one of history’s greatest educators. She designed materials and curricula to enable children to learn skills in steps, at levels they can master, and that correspond to their natural way of learning. Teachers in a Montessori environment nurture the inner attitude of respect and enthusiasm for learning. Children learn by doing as they choose work from many individualized learning materials. The multi-sensory Montessori materials provide experiences at a concrete level then progress toward abstraction by integrating complexity. Opportunities to learn from other students and participate in cooperative projects are inherent in Montessori classrooms due to multi-age grouping. Interdependence rather than competition is encouraged to foster high self-esteem
